Internet Access via DSL or Fiber Optic Modem

Internet / Account Information / Internet Connection

Select the "DSL or fiber optic modem" kind of internet connection if either of these cases applies:

  • You have a DSL or VDSL line. A modem (DSL or VDSL modem) is connected to this line.
  • You have a fiber optic connection. A fiber optic modem is connected to this connection.

Operating Mode

In this operating mode, the following properties apply to the FRITZ!Box:

  • It obtains the public IP address from the Internet service provider via DHCP or PPPoE.
  • It works as a router.
  • It establishes the connection to the Internet.
  • It creates its own local IP network.
  • The firewall of the FRITZ!Box is enabled.

Connecting the FRITZ!Box to a Modem

Connect the FRITZ!Box with the modem, if you have not done so already. Use the network cable included with the FRITZ!Box.

  1. Insert one end of the network cable into the port on the FRITZ!Box labeled "WAN".
  2. Insert the other end into a network socket on the modem.

Selecting Kind of Internet Access and Internet Provider

  1. In the FRITZ!Box user interface, select the "Internet / Account Information" menu.
  2. Select the "Internet Connection" tab.
  3. Select the "DSL or fiber optic modem" entry in the "Internet connection via..." field.
  4. From the list that appears, select your Internet service provider.

Other Internet provider: If your Internet service provider is not included in the list, select the "Other Internet service provider" entry.

Entering Account Information

The "Account Information" area is shown if your Internet provider requires that you enter account information, or if you selected the "Other Internet provider" entry in the "Internet connection via..." area.

If account information is required, you received this information from your Internet service provider.

Enter the account information in the relevant fields:

Proceed as follows if you selected the "Other Internet provider" entry in the "Internet connection via..." area:

  • If you received account information from your Internet service provider, select "Yes" and enter the account information.
  • If you did not receive account information, select "No".

Changing the Connection Settings

The most frequently used values for the connection settings are entered already. You can adjust these values to your requirements.

Internet Connection

Maintain permanently (recommended for flat rates)

If your rate is not charged according to online time, select this setting. Then the FRITZ!Box is always connected with the Internet. If your Internet service provider clears the connection at regular intervals, for instance every 24 hours, FRITZ!Box restores the connection immediately.

If the Internet Service Provider clears the connection at an inconvenient time, you can reschedule this event for a more convenient period. To do this, enable the option "Delay disconnection by provider to the period between". Then select the period of time from the list.

Clear idle connection (recommended for time- or usage-based rates)

If your rate is charged according to online time, you should have the Internet connection cleared whenever you are not exchanging data with the Internet to save online costs. Select the option "Clear Internet connection automatically after ... seconds" and enter the time after which an idle connection is to be cleared automatically. Now the Internet connection will be cleared automatically whenever the connected computers do not request data from the Internet for the specified period.
