Internet Access via Cable Modem or Internet Router

If you are using a cable modem or an internet router, then you can connect the FRITZ!Box to the modem or router with a network cable.
Select "Cable modem or internet router" kind of Internet access if either of these cases applies:
- You have a cable connection to which a cable modem is connected.
- You use an internet router which provides the Internet connection for the network.
Operating Mode
In this operating mode, the following properties apply to the FRITZ!Box:
- The FRITZ!Box receives an IP address from the upstream device via DHCP.
- The FRITZ!Box opens up its own IP network.
- The firewall of the FRITZ!Box is enabled.
- No account information has to be entered.
Connecting the FRITZ!Box to the Modem, Cable Modem or Internet Router
Connect the FRITZ!Box with the cable modem or the Internet router, if you have not done so already. Use the network cable included with the FRITZ!Box.
- Insert one end of the network cable into the port on the FRITZ!Box labeled "WAN".
- Insert the other end into a network socket on the cable modem or Internet router.
Changing the Connection Settings
The most frequently used values for the connection settings are entered already. You can adjust these values to your requirements.
IP Settings
The entry of IP settings is required in only a few connection scenarios. The IP settings are displayed only in these connection scenarios.
Instructions: Selecting "Obtain the IP address automatically (DHCP)"
- Select the "Obtain the IP address automatically (DHCP)" option if you have one of the following situations:
- Your internet provider informed you that you receive your IP settings automatically via DHCP.
- The FRITZ!Box is an IP client of another router and is to automatically receive its IP address from the other router.
Important:Not all FRITZ!Box models support IP client mode.
- Enter the name of the DHCP server in the "DHCP hostname" field:
- If the FRITZ!Box receives its IP address from the DHCP server of the internet provider, then enter the DHCP host name supplied by your internet provider. Leave the "fritz.box" entry in the field if you did not receive a DHCP host name.
- If the FRITZ!Box is an IP client of another router, do not change the "fritz.box" entry.
Instructions: Selecting "Configure the IP address manually"
- Select the "Configure the IP address manually" option in the following cases:
- Your internet provider informed you of fixed IP settings.
- The FRITZ!Box is an IP client of another router and is to receive a fixed IP address.
- Enter the IP settings in the corresponding fields.
