Configuring Online Storage in the FRITZ!Box

Online storage (cloud storage) is storage in the internet, in which you can save photos and other data. If you configure your online storage in the FRITZ!Box, you can enjoy the following advantages:

  • On any computers in the home network, you can use the online storage like a local drive, so that it can be accessed with Windows Explorer or macOS Finder.
  • The access information for the online storage is stored in the FRITZ!Box.
  • Uploads of large amounts of data are possible even when the computer is switched off. The data are cached on a USB storage medium that is connected to the FRITZ!Box.

Requirements

  • The online storage can be accessed via WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning). WebDAV is a standard for providing data in the internet.
  • The "USB storage media" option is disabled in the FRITZ!Box user interface under "Home Network / USB Devices / USB Remote Connection".
  • In order to use online storage you need to connect a USB storage medium to the FRITZ!Box as a cache.

  • Connect the USB storage device to the USB port on the FRITZ!Box.

Disabling the USB Remote Connection for USB Storage Devices in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Select the "Home Network / USB Devices" menu.
  3. Switch to the "USB Remote Connection" tab. If this tab is not available, enable the "Advanced" view of the user interface in the menu with the three dots.
  4. Disable the "USB storage media" option.
  5. Click on "Apply".

Configuring a USB Storage Medium (for NAS)

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Select "Home Network / Storage (NAS)".
  3. Enable the option "Storage (NAS) enabled".
  4. Under "Home Network Sharing", enable the "Access over a network drive (SMB) enabled" setting.
  5. Save your settings by clicking "Apply".

Configuring Online Storage in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Enable the "Advanced" view of the user interface in the menu with the three dots.
  3. Select "Home Network / Storage (NAS)".
  4. Check the option "Online Storage" or click on "Configure now".
  5. Select the provider of your online storage from the "WebDAV provider" menu.
  6. In the following fields, enter the access information supplied by the provider of the online storage.

    Note:Should you have questions regarding the account information, contact the provider of the online storage.

  7. Save your settings by clicking "Apply".

Now the FRITZ!Box will establish a connection to your online storage.

Mapping Online Storage on the Computer as a Network Drive

Windows 10 or 8

  1. Open the Explorer in Windows (for instance, by pressing the Windows key + E).
  2. Left-click on "This PC (Windows 10) or "Computer" (Windows 8).
  3. In the menu bar, click on "Computer" and then select "Map Network Drive".
  4. Select a letter for the drive.
  5. Enter the following path in the "Folder" field: \\fritz.box\FRITZ.NAS\Online

    If the FRITZ!Box is configured as a Mesh Repeater or an IP client: Enter the IP address at which the FRITZ!Box can be reached in the home network instead of fritz.box.

  6. Click on "Finish".
  7. If you are prompted to enter login data: Enter the name and the password of a FRITZ!Box user who has the right to access NAS contents.
  8. If the login data are to be saved, enable the "Reconnect at login" checkbox.
  9. Click on "OK".

Now you can transfer data to online storage in the Windows Explorer. The data are first transferred (cached) to the USB storage medium and then to online storage.

Windows 7

  1. Start the Windows Explorer.
  2. Press the Alt key on the keyboard.

    The Windows Explorer menu bar appears.

  3. Select "Map Network Drive..." from the "Tools" menu.
  4. Enter the following path in the "Folder" field: \\fritz.box\FRITZ.NAS\Online

    If the FRITZ!Box is configured as a Mesh Repeater or an IP client: Enter the IP address at which the FRITZ!Box can be reached in the home network instead of fritz.box.

  5. Click on "Finish".
  6. If you are prompted to enter login data: Enter the name and the password of a FRITZ!Box user who has the right to access NAS contents.
  7. If the login data are to be saved, enable the "Reconnect at login" checkbox.
  8. Click on "Finish".

Now you can transfer data to online storage in the Windows Explorer. The data are first transferred (cached) to the USB storage medium and then to online storage.

macOS X

  1. Start the Finder.
  2. From the "Go" menu, select "Connect to Server...".
  3. Enter the following address in the "Server Address:" field: smb://fritz.box

    If the FRITZ!Box is configured as a Mesh Repeater or an IP client: Enter the IP address at which the FRITZ!Box can be reached in the home network instead of fritz.box.

  4. Click on "Connect".
  5. If you are prompted to enter login data: Enter the name and the password of a FRITZ!Box user who has the right to access NAS contents.
  6. Open "Apple" (icon) / System Preferences / Accounts / Open at Login".
  7. Click on the plus sign (+) under the list "These items will open automatically when you log in".
  8. Under "SHARED", click on "fritz.box".
  9. Select "Online storage" and click on "Add".

Now you can transfer data to online storage in the Finder (under "SHARED"). The data are first transferred (cached) to the USB storage medium and then to online storage.

Other Operating Systems

  1. Use a file manager to access the host name (fritz.box) or the IP address of the FRITZ!Box via the SMB network protocol and map the "Online Storage" folder as a network drive.
