Configuring the Guest Access as a Public Wi-Fi Hotspot

With the Wi-Fi guest access you can make an internet connection available via the FRITZ!Box. The guest access is separate from your home network. Guest cannot access shared files and printers in the home network.

As a public Wi-Fi hotspot, the guest access can be used without a password (open Wi-Fi), making it suitable for the public spaces in a business, a café, or a medical practice.

Security

Various functions in the FRITZ!Box allow a high security standard for the public Wi-Fi hotspot.

OWE (Opportunistic Wireless Encryption)

As in any open Wi-Fi network, data in the FRITZ!Box's public Wi-Fi hotspot are always transmitted without encryption.

With OWE (Opportunistic Wireless Encryption), under certain conditions data transmission can be encrypted here as well; see Encrypted Data Transmission in the Public Wi-Fi Hotspot (OWE).

Functions for Security and Monitoring the Wi-Fi Hotspot

The following functions can be configured:

  • Captive portal that allows login with the Wi-Fi hotspot only after consent to the conditions of use you specify. Every time the FRITZ!Box is restarted, all users must log back in and consent to the conditions of use again.
  • Notifications by Email (Push Service) about Registrations and Deregistrations at the Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Time restrictions for the use of the Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Filters for websites (blacklist/whitelist)
  • Filtering of websites harmful to minors with the German government's BPjM module ("Germany" must be selected under "System / Region" and "Language / Country Settings")
  • Restrict permitted internet applications (for instance, only surfing and email)
  • You can specify whether or not registered devices may communicate with each other.

Configuring a Public Wi-Fi Hotspot

Prerequisites

  • The FRITZ!Box's Wi-Fi network is enabled.
  • The FRITZ!Box makes the internet connection available in the home network. The FRITZ!Box is not configured as an IP client that uses the internet connection of another device.

Restricting Internet Access via the Wi-Fi Guest Access

Wireless devices in the guest network are assigned the "Guest" access profile in the FRITZ!Box parental controls. You can configure restrictions for the "Guest" access profile, for instance, to restrict internet use to certain periods or to block certain website.

Rules

The following presetting is configured for the "Guest" access profile if the country "Germany" is selected in the country settings of the FRITZ!Boc (under "System / Region and Language"):

  • Via the "Guest" access profile, no websites can be accessed that have been classified as harmful to youth on the official German BPjM index.

Instructions: Restricting Internet Access Time

  1. Select "Internet / Filters" in the user interface.
  2. Switch to the "Access Profiles" tab.
  3. Click on the edit button next to the "Guest" profile.
  4. Under "Period", select the option "restricted".
  5. Click on the "Internet Use Blocked" button.

Fast Connection Using a QR Code

Your guests can connect to the Wi-Fi guest access quickly by scanning a QR code. On Android devices, FRITZ!App WLAN or another QR code reader can be used for scanning; on iOS devices, a reader like "Qrafter".
