Setting Up Dynamic DNS in the FRITZ!Box

Dynamic DNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) is a service that allows the FRITZ!Box to be accessed from the internet under a fixed domain name at all times, even though the public IP address of the FRITZ!Box changes regularly. This ensures that applications and services for which you set up port forwarding rules in the FRITZ!Box can always be reached from the internet.

Note:As an alternative to Dynamic DNS you can also use the MyFRITZ! service. For information about how to set up MyFRITZ!, see the MyFRITZ! Account help page.

Requirements

The FRITZ!Box must receive a publicly accessible IP address from the internet provider for communication with the internet. In the following cases the public FRITZ!Box does not receive a public IP address:

  • The FRITZ!Box uses an existing internet connection in the network. It is configured either as an IP client or as an independent router (cascaded). In these cases, set up dynamic DNS in the network device used to establish the internet connection.
  • The FRITZ!Box is connected to a DS Lite connection.

Setting Up Dynamic DNS

  1. Set the "View: Advanced" setting in the FRITZ!Box user interface if it is not already enabled.
  2. Select the "Internet / Permit Access" menu.
  3. Click on the "Dynamic DNS" tab.
  4. Configure Dynamic DNS as is described in the Help on Dynamic DNS.
  5. Save your settings by clicking on "Apply".

Now the FRITZ!Box transmits its current IP address to the dynamic DNS provider every time it connects to the internet so that the FRITZ!Box can always be contacted via its unique dynamic DNS domain name.
