Using a USB Printer on a Computer via the USB Remote Connection

With the "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection" software, you can use a USB printer connected to the FRITZ!Box as if it were connected directly to the computer.

Setting Up the USB Printer on the Computer

Make the connected USB printer available to the computer by working through the following steps:

  • Install the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software.
  • Enable the USB remote connection in the FRITZ!Box.
  • Configure the connection to the USB printer in the software for the USB remote connection. You can configure automatic connecting or set up a permanent connection.

Requirements

  • Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 (64-bit or 32-bit) is installed on the computer.
  • A USB printer is connected to the FRITZ!Box.

Rules

  • The FRITZ!Box can supply USB devices with up to 500 mA. If more power is needed, connect your USB devices via an active USB hub.

Instructions: Installing the USB Remote Connection Software

Install the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software on every computer that is to use the USB printer.

  1. Log on to the computer as the Windows user who wants to use the USB printer via the USB remote connection.

    Note:If the user does not have administrator rights, you must enter a valid administrator password to install the software.

  2. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface and select "Home Network / USB Devices".
  3. Switch to the "USB Remote Connection" tab. If this tab is not available, enable the "Advanced View" of the user interface in the menu with the three dots.
  4. Activate the "USB remote connection enabled" checkbox.
  5. Click on the "USB remote connection software" link.
  6. Install the "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection" software on the computer.
  7. Perform steps 1 through 6 for all Windows user that are to use the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection.

  1. In the user interface, select "Home Network / USB Devices".
  2. Switch to the "USB Remote Connection" tab. If this tab is not available, enable the "Advanced View" of the user interface in the menu with the three dots.
  3. Activate the "USB remote connection enabled" and "USB printers (including all-in-one printers)" checkboxes.
  4. Click on "Apply".

Instructions: Configuring Automatic Connecting in the USB Remote Connection Software

If you configure automatic connecting, all of the computers connected with the FRITZ!Box can send print jobs to the printer. Other printer functions like the ink level display and the fax/scanner function are not available.

  • Right-click on the icon for the remote connection software in the notification area of the Windows taskbar.
  • Enable "Connect printer automatically".
  • Open the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software: Double-click on the icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar.
  • Enter the name of a FRITZ!Box user and their corresponding password. If you have not configured any FRITZ!Box users, just enter the password for login with the FRITZ!Box user interface. Do not enter anything in the "User name" field.
  • Click on "Refresh".
  • Right-click on the USB printer that the computer should automatically connect to.
  • Select "Assign printer".
  • Follow the instructions to select the printer driver.

Instructions: Configuring a Permanent Connection in the USB Remote Connection Software

If you configure a permanent connection, all of the printer functions, including ink level display and fax/scanner functions, are available on one computer. Other computers cannot access the printer.

  • Open the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software: Double-click on the icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar.
  • Enter the name of a FRITZ!Box user and their corresponding password. If you have not configured any FRITZ!Box users, just enter the password for login with the FRITZ!Box user interface. Do not enter anything in the "User name" field.
  • Click on "Refresh".
  • Right-click on the USB printer that you want to connect to the computer.
  • Select "Assign printer".
  • Follow the instructions to select the printer driver.
  • Click on the USB printer to enable the permanent connection.
