Using USB storage on a computer via the USB remote connection

With the "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection" software, you can use USB storage connected to the FRITZ!Box as if the storage device were connected directly to the computer.

The USB storage is available on one single computer. The following functions are not available via an active USB remote connection:

  • Access to USB storage by multiple computers
  • Access to storage via the FRITZ!NAS user interface
  • Access to storage via MyFRITZ!
  • FRITZ!Box media server

Setting Up USB Storage on the Computer

Make the connected USB storage available to the computer by working through the following steps:

  • Install the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software.
  • Enable the USB remote connection in the FRITZ!Box.
  • Configure the connection to USB storage in the software for the USB remote connection.

Prerequisites

  • Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 (64 or 32 Bit) is installed on the computer.
  • A USB storage device is connected to the FRITZ!Box.

Rules

  • The FRITZ!Box can supply USB devices with up to 500 mA. If more power is needed, connect your USB devices via an active USB hub.
  • Make backups of your data. The FRITZ!Box cannot prevent data losses due to external influences (such as voltage spikes or drops during storms).

Instructions: Installing the USB Remote Connection Software

  1. Log on to the computer as the Windows user who wants to use the USB printer via the USB remote connection.

    Note:If the user does not have administrator rights, you must enter a valid administrator password to install the software.

  2. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface and select "Home Network / USB/Storage".
  3. Switch to the "USB Remote Connection" tab. If this tab is not available, enable the "Advanced" view of the user interface in the menu with the three dots.
  4. Activate the "USB remote connection enabled" checkbox.
  5. Click on the "USB remote connection software" link.
  6. Install the "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection" software on the computer.
  7. Perform steps 1 through 6 for all Windows user that are to use the USB remote connection.

  1. In the user interface, select "Home Network / USB/Storage".
  2. Switch to the "USB Remote Connection" tab. If this tab is not available, enable the "Advanced" view of the user interface in the menu with the three dots.
  3. Activate the "USB remote connection enabled" and "USB storage" checkboxes.
  4. Click on "Apply".

Instructions: Configuring a Connection to USB Storage in the USB Remote Connection Software

  • Open the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software: Double-click on the symbol in the notification area of the Windows taskbar.
  • Enter the name of a FRITZ!Box user and their corresponding password. If you have not configured any FRITZ!Box users, just enter the password for login with the FRITZ!Box user interface. Do not enter anything in the "User name" field.
  • Click on "Refresh".
  • Right-click on the USB storage that you want to connect to the computer.
  • Click on "Connect".

The computer detects the USB storage as a USB device. You can use the USB storage as if it were connected directly to your computer.
