Configuring Online Storage in the FRITZ!Box

Online storage (cloud storage) is storage in the internet, in which you can save photos and other data. If you configure your online storage in the FRITZ!Box, you can enjoy the following advantages:

  • On any computers in the home network, you can use the online storage like a local drive, so that it can be accessed with Windows Explorer or macOS Finder.
  • The access information for the online storage is stored in the FRITZ!Box.
  • Uploads of large amounts of data are possible even when the computer is switched off. The data are cached on a USB storage medium that is connected to the FRITZ!Box.

Configuring Online Storage

Requirements

  • The online storage supports access via the WebDAV protocol.
  • At least one FRITZ!Box user with "Access to NAS Contents" rights is configured under "System / FRITZ!Box Users".
  • Login with the FRITZ!Box password or login with a FRITZ!Box user name and password is enabled under "System / FRITZ!Box Users".
  • A USB storage device is connected to the FRITZ!Box. The available storage space on the USB storage device must equal at least the volume of data to be copied to or from the online storage.

    Note:The FRITZ!Box creates a directory on the USB storage medium and uses this directory as a cache for copying data.

Instructions: Attaching and Configuring USB Storage

  1. Connect the USB storage medium: USB storage media with power consumption of no more than 900 mA can be connected directly to the FRITZ!Box. If the power consumption exceeds 900 mA, connect the USB storage medium to the FRITZ!Box via an active USB hub.
  2. In the FRITZ!Box user interface, select "Home Network / USB/Storage".
  3. Switch to the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
  4. Disable the "USB remote connection enabled" checkbox and click on "Apply".
  5. Switch to the "Devices and Network Sharing" tab.
  6. Enable the "Storage (NAS) function of the FRITZ!Box enabled".
  7. Click on "Apply".

Instructions: Configuring Online Storage

  1. In the user interface, select "Home Network / USB/Storage".
  2. Enable the "Online storage enabled" checkbox.
  3. Select your online storage from the "WebDAV Providers" list.
  4. Enter the access information for your online storage.
  5. Click on "Apply".

The FRITZ!Box establishes a connection to the online storage.

Mapping Online Storage on the Computer as a Network Drive

You can map the online storage as a network drive. Then you can use this storage like a local drive on all computers in the home network, so that it can be accessed with Windows Explorer or macOS Finder.

Instructions: Mapping a Network Drive in Windows 10 or 8

  1. Open the Explorer in Windows (for instance, by pressing the Windows key + E).
  2. Left-click on "This PC (Windows 10) or "Computer" (Windows 8).
  3. In the menu bar, click on "Computer" and then select "Map Network Drive".
  4. Select a letter for the drive.
  5. Enter the following path in the "Folder" field: \\fritz.box\FRITZ.NAS\Online

    If the FRITZ!Box is configured as a Mesh Repeater or an IP client: Enter the IP address at which the FRITZ!Box can be reached in the home network instead of fritz.box.

  6. Click on "Finish".
  7. If you are prompted to enter login data: Enter the name and the password of a FRITZ!Box user who has the right to access NAS contents.
  8. If the login data are to be saved, enable the "Reconnect at login" checkbox.
  9. Click on "OK".

Now you can transfer data to online storage in the Windows Explorer. The data are first transferred (cached) to the USB storage medium and then to online storage.

Instructions: Mapping a Network Drive in Windows 7

  1. Start the Windows Explorer.
  2. Press the Alt key on the keyboard.

    The Windows Explorer menu bar appears.

  3. Select "Map Network Drive..." from the "Tools" menu.
  4. Enter the following path in the "Folder" field: \\fritz.box\FRITZ.NAS\Online

    If the FRITZ!Box is configured as a Mesh Repeater or an IP client: Enter the IP address at which the FRITZ!Box can be reached in the home network instead of fritz.box.

  5. Click on "Finish".
  6. If you are prompted to enter login data: Enter the name and the password of a FRITZ!Box user who has the right to access NAS contents.
  7. If the login data are to be saved, enable the "Reconnect at login" checkbox.
  8. Click on "Finish".

Instructions: Mapping a Network Drive in macOS X

  1. Start the Finder.
  2. From the "Go" menu, select "Connect to Server...".
  3. Enter the following address in the "Server Address:" field: smb://fritz.box

    If the FRITZ!Box is configured as a Mesh Repeater or an IP client: Enter the IP address at which the FRITZ!Box can be reached in the home network instead of fritz.box.

  4. Click on "Connect".
  5. If you are prompted to enter login data: Enter the name and the password of a FRITZ!Box user who has the right to access NAS contents.
  6. Open "Apple" (icon) / System Preferences / Accounts / Open at Login".
  7. Click on the plus sign (+) under the list "These items will open automatically when you log in".
  8. Under "SHARED", click on "fritz.box".
  9. Select "Online storage" and click on "Add".

Now you can transfer data to online storage in the Finder (under "SHARED"). The data are first transferred (cached) to the USB storage medium and then to online storage.

Instructions: Mapping a Network Drive in Other Operating Systems

  1. Use a file manager to access the host name (fritz.box) or the IP address of the FRITZ!Box via the SMB network protocol and map the "Online Storage" folder as a network drive.
