Home Network / Mesh / Mesh Settings

You can use more than one FRITZ!Box in your Mesh. The different FRITZ!Boxes then assume different functions and are configured for different modes of operation.

Changing the Mesh Operating Mode

In the Mesh there is always one FRITZ!Box that is the Mesh Master. Every other FRITZ!Box in the Mesh is configured as a Mesh Repeater.

Operating Mode Mesh Master

If the FRITZ!Box is the Mesh Master, the settings of the FRITZ!Box apply to the entire Mesh. Mesh Repeaters (FRITZ!Repeaters, FRITZ!Powerline with wireless LAN, additional FRITZ!Boxes) automatically adopt the following settings from the Mesh Master:

  • Wireless network settings: wireless network name (SSID), network key, wireless channel, schedule, guest access
  • Automatic update under "System / Update"
  • AVM Services under "Internet / Account Information"
  • Settings under "System / Push Service"

Operating Mode Mesh Repeater

Sometimes the FRITZ!Box is placed in the basement of a house, where the internet connection is located. If the basement has a concrete ceiling, the wireless network of the FRITZ!Box often has weak or no reception at all in the living quarters.

In this case you can use the FRITZ!Box in "Mesh Repeater" mode in combination with a second FRITZ!Box:

Set up the FRITZ!Box in the basement as a Mesh Repeater and use a LAN cable to connect it with a second FRITZ!Box located in the living quarters. The second FRITZ!Box is then set up as a Mesh Master and IP client to make wireless LAN available in the home network. The FRITZ!Box in the basement provides the internet connection.

Note:Because the FRITZ!Box does not support IP client mode, you cannot use the Mesh Repeater function to expand the wireless network of another FRITZ!Box. This is possible only with FRITZ!Box models that support IP client mode.
