Substitute Connection

You can enable the use of a backup connection. With this function the FRITZ!Box can automatically remedy the following disruption: An outgoing call via an internet telephone number cannot be established because the telephone number used is not registered. The reason for this could be a disruption with the telephony provider's equipment.

If the use of a backup connection is not enabled, the FRITZ!Box attempts to connect the call using a different telephone number.

Requirements

When a call cannot be established, the FRITZ!Box can use a backup connection whenever the following prerequisites are met:

  • The call is established via an internet telephone number.
  • At least one other telephone number (internet or landline number) is configured in the FRITZ!Box.
  • You do not use Click to Dial to make calls.

Instructions: Enabling the Use of a Backup Connection

  1. Select "Telephony / Telephone Numbers / Line Settings" in the user interface.
  2. Enable the "Use substitute connection" checkbox.
  3. Click on "Apply".

Security

Prevent use of internet telephony from the home network

If you prevent the use of internet telephony from the home network, the following devices and applications can no longer accept or make telephone calls over the internet:

  • IP telephones in the home network that are not configured in the FRITZ!Box.
  • Programs in the home network (also malware) that use the SIP protocol. Internet telephony software that uses a proprietary protocol will not be blocked.

Limit the number of calls to foreign numbers

When this checkbox is enabled, the FRITZ!Box initially generates a warning when an unusual number of international calls are made. If this unusual use continues, the FRITZ!Box sets up a call block for all international calls. In both cases you will receive the following notifications:

  • The "Info" LED on the FRITZ!Box glows red.
  • A message appears in red on the "Overview" page of the user interface. An event is displayed under "System / Event Log".
  • If the FRITZ!Box Info push service is enabled (under "System / Push Service / Sender"), you receive a push service mail.
  • If you use the MyFRITZ! App, you receive a message to the app.

The notifications contain information and instructions about the next steps to take.

Instructions: Canceling the Limit for Certain Countries

If you frequently make international calls, the "Limit the number of calls to foreign numbers" checkbox can be disabled or the limit can be suspended for calls to certain countries. To do this, set up dialing rules for these countries:

  1. Select "Telephony / Call Handling / Dialing Rules".
  2. Click on the "New Dialing Rule" button.
  3. Select the "Telephone number" number range.
  4. Enter in the "Telephone number" field the desired country prefix, for instance, 0039 for Italy.
  5. Specify which telephone number the FRITZ!Box should use to make calls to this country.
  6. Click on "OK".
  7. Set up dialing rules for other countries as needed.

Music on Hold

When you put a call on hold (for instance, to pick up a second call), the party on hold hears music.

Either your telephone provider's music on hold will be played, or the music on hold set in the FRITZ!Box. The music set in the FRITZ!Box will always be played if your telephone provider allows its music on hold to be replaced. In this case you can configure your own audio file as music on hold.

Rules

To configure your own music on hold, the following rules apply:

  • The music on hold can be no longer than 30 seconds long. If the audio file is longer, only the first 30 seconds will be used.
  • The audio file must have one of the following formats: MP3 (fixed data rate, 128 kbit/s, 44.1 kHz, stereo) or WAV (8000 Hz, 16 bit, mono).

Setting up Music on Hold in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click on the "Change" link.
  2. Select the music saved in the FRITZ!Box or the "Own music" option.
  3. If you selected "Own music", browse to select an audio file.
  4. Click on "OK".

Telephony Connection

Various settings for telephony connections are available only in the advanced view of the user interface.

Instructions: Hiding and Displaying Settings

  1. To view or hide the settings for the telephony connection, click on "Change Settings".

Fax transmission using T.38

Enable this setting if your internet telephony provider supports T.38. The T.38 standard (fax over IP) provides for reliable fax reception and sending over the internet. Fax messages are transmitted in a special protocol rather than as voice signals.

Keep port sharing of the internet router enabled for internet telephony

This setting is available only when the FRITZ!Box connects to the internet via another router. When the setting is enabled, the FRITZ!Box sends IP packets at regular intervals to keep the port forwarding of the internet router active for internet telephony.

VLAN required for internet telephony

Enable this setting only if you have received a VLAN ID for internet telephony from your internet service provider.

Use additional connection for internet telephony via DSL (PVC)

Enable this setting only if your internet provider supports establishing a second internet connection for Internet telephony (PVC). The values for the ATM settings (VPI and VCI) are supplied by your internet provider.
