Internet Connection
Internet / Account Information / Internet Connection
The FRITZ!Box can establish internet access via various connections: via the DSL line, by connecting to a modem (cable, fiber optic), or by connecting to another router. Internet access for the appropriate connection is configured on the "Internet Connection" page.
Click on the "Apply" button to save your settings. If you leave the page without saving, all of your changes will be discarded.
Internet Service Provider
First select your internet service provider.
In the "Internet Service Providers" area there are two drop-down lists presenting a selection of Internet service providers. Select your internet service provider:
- Open the first drop-down list and select your internet service provider.
- If your internet service provider is not included in the firsts list, select the "More internet service providers" entry and select your internet service provider in the second drop-down list.
- If your internet service provider is not included in the second list either, select the "Other internet service provider" entry in the second list.
What you select in these two lists depends on your circumstances and on what you would like to do. Once you have made your selections in the two lists, then the further settings you need to make will be displayed.
The possible initial situations are listed below. For each possible situation, the settings you must make are described along with anything else you must do. Check the descriptions to see which situation applies to you.
FRITZ!Box as an Internet Router on the DSL or VDSL Line
- You have a DSL or VDSL line.
- Your internet service provider is included in one of the two lists.
- You have connected the FRITZ!Box directly to the DSL or VDSL line and would like to operate it as a router.
Select your internet service provider from the lists.
In this case the two areas "Account Information" and "Connection Settings" appear so that you can configure additional settings.
The fields in the "Account Information" area are already adapted to your internet service provider's naming conventions.
Enter the account information you received from your Internet service provider in the appropriate fields.
The connection settings are already set to the values used most often. If you would like to change these values, click "Change Connection Settings". The "Internet Connection" areas appear, where you can make changes.
FRITZ!Box as a Router on the Cable Connection
- You have a cable connection to which you have connected a cable modem.
- Your cable network provider is included in one of the two lists. The cable network provider is your internet service provider.
- You would like to connect the FRITZ!Box to the cable modem and operate it as a router.
Select the cable network provider (internet service provider).
In this case there is a "Connection Settings" area for additional settings.
Enter the transfer rate of your internet connection in the "Connection Settings" area. This information is necessary to prioritize your network devices.
To make the internet connection available in the FRITZ!Box, you must do the following:
- Make sure that the cable modem has an active internet connection.
- Use a network cable to connect the cable modem with the "WAN" port on your FRITZ!Box.
FRITZ!Box As an IP Client via Network Cable to a Router
- You have a router that establishes the internet connection.
- You would like to operate the FRITZ!Box as an IP client on the router. The FRITZ!Box is then a network device in the IP network of the router and uses the router's internet connection. The FRITZ!Box firewall is no longer enabled.
Work through the following steps:
- Insert a network cable into one of the the LAN ports (yellow) on the FRITZ!Box.
Note:You can also use the "WAN" port as a LAN port. Note the following: For the "WAN" connection, you must change the "WAN Setting" under "Home Network / Network / Network Settings" such that the WAN port works as a LAN port.
- Connect the other end of the network cable to a LAN socket on the router.
- Under "Internet Provider", select the "More internet providers" entry.
- In the second field, select the "Other Internet Provider" entry.
- Under "Connect via", select the "Connection to an external modem or router" option.
- Under "Operating mode", select the option "Share existing internet connection in the network (Mesh Wi-Fi / IP client mode)".
- Under "Connection Settings", click on "Change Connection Settings".
- Specify how the FRITZ!Box is to receive its IP settings:
- If the FRITZ!Box is to receive its IP settings from the router, select "Obtain the IP address automatically (DHCP)". Enter the DHCP host name of router in the "DHCP hostname" field. Leave the field empty if you do not know the name.
- Select "Configure the IP address manually" if the FRITZ!Box is to receive a fixed IP address. Enter the IP address and the other IP settings in the appropriate fields.
- Click on "Apply".
FRITZ!Box As a Router via Network Cable to an Existing Internet Connection
- You already have an internet connection that works.
- You would like to use the FRITZ!Box at the existing internet connection, whereby the FRITZ!Box itself works as a router, providing a network with its own address range.
- You would like to connect the FRITZ!Box with the existing connection via network cable.
Work through the following steps:
- Select the "Existing connection over LAN" entry from the first list.
- Connect a network cable to the "WAN" port on the FRITZ!Box.
- Connect the other end of the network cable to the existing internet connection.
Note:When the settings are applied the FRITZ!Box automatically obtains a new IP address, and as a consequence, a new network address range. A separate window presents an overview of the new network address information. Make a note of this information or print out the page. The FRITZ!Box now can be reached at the new IP address.
Now the following applies for the FRITZ!Box and its network:
- The FRITZ!Box itself establishes the internet connection for its network.
- No account information is required.
Note:If the FRITZ!Box should be an IP client in the existing network rather than functioning as a router, select the "More internet service providers" entry in the first list and "Other internet service provider" in the second list. Then make the appropriate settings in the "Connection" and "Operating Mode" areas.
FRITZ!Box As a Router via Wi-Fi to an Existing Internet Connection

- You would like to connect the FRITZ!Box with the existing connection via Wi-Fi.
The following prerequisites must be met:
- the FRITZ!Box transmits in the 2.4-GHz frequency range
- the FRITZ!Box uses WPA encryption
- the FRITZ!Box is allowed to establish a Wi-Fi connection to the Wi-Fi network of the existing internet connection
Work through the following steps:
- Select the "Existing connection over Wi-Fi" entry from the first list.
- A list of the Wi-Fi networks in the vicinity is displayed. Select the Wi-Fi network with which you want to connect the FRITZ!Box.
- Enter the network key of the Wi-Fi network in the "Network key" field in the "Security" area.
- Click on "Apply".
Note:When the settings are applied, the FRITZ!Box automatically obtains a new IP address and a new network address range.
Internet Connection with a USB Modem via UMTS / HSPA
