Storage Media on the FRITZ!Box

Enable "Storage (NAS) enabled" to display the storage media on the FRITZ!Box and configure settings for these storage media.

  • Available storage media are displayed in a table with storage type, name and status.
  • In the "Enabled" column you can enable or disable the available storage media, and also safely remove storage devices.
  • Click the links in the "Type of Storage" column to access the storage media. Storage media are accessed over FRITZ!NAS. When prompted to do so, enter the user name you defined in the "System / FRITZ!Box Password / FRITZ!Box User" area.
  • You can start manual indexing of the storage media in the "File Index" column.

Every time FRITZ!NAS is started the storage media of the FRITZ!Box are reindexed. If you do not use FRITZ!NAS to access your storage media, start the indexing in the "File Index" column manually from time to time to guarantee that the devices in your home network can access all of the contents on your storage media.

These storage media can be used on your FRITZ!Box:

  • USB storage devices
Storage devices connected to the USB port of the FRITZ!Box, for instance a USB stick or USB hard drive.
  • Internal memory
Storage integrated in the FRITZ!Box. Note the available memory capacity in the "Status" column of the table.
  • Online storage
Memory space in the internet, provided by your internet service provider. To synchronize your local and online storage, a USB storage device must be connected to the FRITZ!Box. The available storage space on the USB storage device must equal at least the volume of data to be copied to or from the online storage.

Granting Access to Storage to Users from the Internet

Work through the following steps to release FRITZ!Box memory for users from the Internet:

  1. Open "System / FRITZ!Box Password / FRITZ!Box Users".
  2. Click the "Edit" button of a user or click "Add User".
  3. Enable the option "Access from the Internet allowed".
  4. Enable the option "Access to NAS contents".
  5. In the "Storage (NAS) Rights" section, select the directories and rights for the users,
  6. Confirm by clicking "OK".

Note:To allow access from the Internet over FTP, enable the option "Internet access to your storage media via FTP/FTPS enabled" under "Internet / Permit Access / FRITZ!Box Services".

The folders of the FRITZ!Box memory released for sharing can be reached from the Internet via a web browser.

File exchange is especially convenient with the help of FTP software like FireFTP, Total Commander, SmartFTP, FTP Voyager or Core FTP. As an example of how to use these programs, the next section describes how to use FireFTP, a free add-on for the Mozilla Firefox web browser, to set up an account and establish a connection to your storage media:

  1. Select the "Tools / Add-ons" menu in Mozilla Firefox and install "FireFTP".
  2. Start FireFTP in Mozilla Firefox by clicking "Tools / Web Developer / FireFTP".
  3. Select "Create an account...".
  4. Enter the following information on the "Main" tab:

Account Name: assign any name you like.

Host: is the IP address at which FRITZ!Box can be reached from the Internet. The IP address is displayed in the "Grant access to memory to users from the Internet" area and is located right after the "@" symbol at the end of the ftp call.

Login: Enter the user name you configured in your FRITZ!Box.

Password: Enter the password you configured for this user.

  5. Confirm by clicking "OK".

Click "Connect" to establish the connection to the FRITZ!Box storage media.

Allow only secure FTP connections

Connections to the FRITZ!Box FTP server generally can be established as secure or insecure connections. With the "Internet access to your storage media via FTP/FTPS enabled" option, users are allowed to establish only secure FTP connections to the FRITZ!Box. The software to be used to establish secure FTP connections must support this security and be configured for it. Current web browsers do not support this function at the this time.

In your FTP software—in our example, FireFTP, a free Add-on for the Mozilla Firefox web browser—set up the following security settings for your FTP connection to the FRITZ!Box storage media:

  1. Start FireFTP in Mozilla Firefox by clicking "Tools / Web Developer / FireFTP".
  2. Select the configured access to your FRITZ!Box storage media.
  3. Click "Edit".
  4. Switch to the "Connection" tab and enter the following values:

Security: Select the "Auth TLS (Best)" setting.

  5. Confirm by clicking "OK".

Now all access from the Internet to the storage media of the FRITZ!Box will be secured by FTPS.

Media Server enabled (Musikbox enabled)

With this function you can stream media data like music, images and video from a USB storage device or your FRITZ!Box's internal memory to compatible playback devices, like FRITZ!Media. All playback devices registered on the FRITZ!Box and thus integrated into the local network must support the UPnP AV standard.
