Wireless / Security / Encryption

WPA encryption protects your wireless network from unauthorized use. When establishing a wireless connection to the router (FRITZ!Box), the FRITZ!Repeater adopts the WPA mode and the network key from the router. You can change these settings.

WPA encryption

The FRITZ!Repeater is configured such that when it establishes the connection to the wireless access point (FRITZ!Box), it adopts the wireless LAN access information from the access point. This includes:

  • WPA mode
  • Network key
  • Radio network name (SSID) (see under "Radio Settings")

If the FRITZ!Repeater and the wireless access point have the same wireless access information, then:

Wireless devices like notebooks and smartphones automatically connect with the device (wireless access point or FRITZ!Repeater) that currently offers the higher transmission power.

Change the wireless network key

Change the wireless network key under the following circumstances:

  • You would like to specify that wireless devices like notebooks and smartphones connect with either the FRITZ!Repeater or the wireless access point.
  • The wireless network of the FRITZ!Repeater is to be protected with a different wireless network key than the wireless network of the access point (FRITZ!Box).

Preprations: Disable adoption of the wireless network name

  1. Select "Wireless / Radio Settings".
  2. Disable the setting "Take on the same radio network name as the wireless base station (FRITZ!Box)"
  3. Enter a name for the wireless network (SSID) of the FRITZ!Repeater.
  4. Click "Apply".

Now you can select the wireless network of the FRITZ!Repeater directly when establishing a wireless connection.

Entering the Network Key

  1. Select "Wireless / Security".
  2. Select the wireless mode "WPA + WPA2" or "WPA2 (CCMP)".

When you select "WPA2 (CCMP)", you can connect only wireless device that support WPA2 with the FRITZ!Repeater.

  3. Enter a network key.

The network key must be at least 8 characters in length.

A secure network key is at least 20 characters long and contains numerals along with upper and lower case letters and special characters. See also the list of valid characters.

  4. Click "Apply".

The "Settings for Wireless Security" window appears.

Additional Security Settings

The wireless devices displayed may communicate with each other

With this setting you specify whether the displayed wireless devices can exchange data with each other:

Setting isFunction
Enabled The wireless devices can see each other and exchange data with each other.
disabled The wireless devices cannot see each other or exchange data with each other.

Allowing All Wireless Devices or Restricting Wireless LAN Access

Enabling the option "Do not allow any new wireless devices" does not provide sufficient protection from unauthorized use of your wireless network. To protect the network effectively, set WPA encryption under "Wireless / Security".

With these options you define which devices can connect with the FRITZ!Repeater:

OptionPermitted devices
Allow all new wireless devices
  • All known wireless devices
  • New wireless devices that are not yet known to the FRITZ!Repeater
Do not allow any new wireless devices
  • All known wireless devices

New wireless LAN devices can be introduced to the FRITZ!Repeater by clicking the "Add Wireless Device" button.
