Internet / Filters / Access Profiles / New Access Profile

On the "New Access Profile" page you can set up and edit the access profile.

Click on the "OK" button to save your settings. If you leave the page without saving, all of your changes will be discarded.

Name

Enter here a name for the access profile.

Time Limit

By defining periods you specify when internet use is allowed and when it is not.

With the "Period" and "Time Budget" settings you can restrict the time for internet use.

The period specifies the time during which the internet can be used each day. The time budget specifies how long the internet can be used during these periods.

Period

First enable one of the settings "always", "never" or "restricted":

SettingDescription/Effect
always
  • The period for internet use is unrestricted with this setting. The internet can be used at all times, 24 hours every day.
  • For the "Standard" and "Guest" profiles, and for new access profiles, this is the setting configured by default.
  • On the timetable every day is marked completely in blue.
  • No changes can be made to the timetable.
never
  • Internet access is blocked.
  • No changes can be made to the timetable.
restricted
  • Enable this setting if you would like to set times on the timetable in order to restrict internet use to certain periods.

Description of the Timetable:

  • On the timetable you can enter when internet use is permitted on individual weekdays and when it is not.
  • Blue marking: Internet use is allowed during the periods marked in blue on the timetable.
  • No blue marking: Internet use is not allowed during the periods not marked in blue.
  • Each day is divided into 15-minute intervals.

Here is how to mark periods on the timetable: Click and drag

  1. Place the mouse cursor at the beginning time.
  2. Press and hold down the mouse button while pulling the mouse cursor to the desired end of the period permitted.
  3. If the subsequent days are to receive the same marking, simply pull the mouse cursor further down.

To remove the markings, proceed just as you did to select them.

Time Budget

With the time budget you specify for how many hours internet use is permitted on the individual days.

The time budget applies only to new access profiles you set up. The "Standard" and "Guest" profiles do not have a time budget.

You have the choice between a limited and an unlimited time budget.

SettingDescription/Effect
unlimited
  • An unlimited time budget allows unrestricted internet use within the defined period.
  • The periods marked in blue on the timetable can be used without restriction.
restricted

With the "restricted" setting you can define at what times and for how long the internet may be used on each day of the week.

For a restricted budget the following always apply:

  • Once the daily budget has been exhausted, the internet cannot be used for the rest of the day.
  • If a daily budget was not exhausted it expires rather than being added to the next day's budget.

Example:

If the "always" setting is selected in the "Period" area, then the complete timetable is marked in blue and internet use is possible at any time on every day. With the limited time budget you can define a maximum length of use for each day, for instance five hours each day. As soon as the five hours have been exhausted, the internet can no longer be used on this day.

Shared budget

If this setting is enabled, all network devices to which the access profile is assigned share one daily budget.

Example:

The access profile has the following settings:

Period: Every day from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Budget: 6 hours per day; the "shared budget" setting is enabled.

The access profile is assigned to three network devices.

When is the daily budget of 6 hours exhausted?

Sample calculation 1:

All three devices begin surfing the net at the same time: the daily budget is exhausted after two hours

Sample calculation 2:

The first device starts surfing at 1:00 pm. It uses one hour up to 2:00 pm: 1
The second device starts surfing at 2:00 pm. By 3:00 pm the first and the second device use two hours. This makes for a total of three hours by 3:00 pm. +2
The third device starts surfing at 3:00 pm. Now all three devices are using the internet. Up to 4:00 pm they use three hours. Then the daily budget is exhausted.

+3

=6

The sample calculations illustrate how a shared budget is used up whenever multiple devices are used at the same time.

Filters for Web Pages

Using the blacklist and the whitelist filter lists you can block or allow access to web pages.

  • There are no web sites preconfigured in the filter lists. This means that there are no restrictions to accessing Internet sites. Any web site can be opened.
  • You must enter in these lists the web sites to which you wish to permit or prohibit access.
  • Access to websites via https is not restricted ex works. If you would like to block access to https pages, you must enter these pages in the black list. Only complete domains can be blocked for https. With https it is not possible to block individual subdomains, paths or IP addresses.
  • You can use only one of the two lists in an access profile, either the blacklist or the whitelist.
  • When editing the lists, please note the instructions on the Help pages.
Blacklist
  • Access is blocked to web sites included in the blacklist.
  • Access to web sites not on the blacklist is permitted.
  • A blacklist makes sense when access to most web sites is to be permitted, and blocked pages are the exception.
Whitelist
  • Access to web sites on the whitelist is permitted.
  • Access is blocked to web sites not included in the whitelist.
  • A whitelist makes sense when access to most web sites is to be blocked, and permitted pages are the exception.
  • An empty whitelist has no effect and does not mean that no websites can be accessed. If access to the Internet is to be blocked for a certain device, then assign the "Blocked" access profile to that device.

Filter web sites

Enable this option if you would like to use filter lists.

When this option is enabled, the preconfigured selection is "Block web sites (blacklist)".

Permit web sites (whitelist)

Select this setting if you would like to permit the user to visit only the web sites on the whitelist. You can write your own whitelist on the page accessed by clicking "Internet / Filter / Lists".

Block web sites (Blacklist)

Select this setting if you would like to block web site access using a blacklist. You can write your own blacklist on the page accessed by clicking "Internet / Filter / Lists".

When a blacklist is used, web sites can only be opened by entering their names (URL). It is no longer to access such web sites with the IP address. If IP addresses are entered, they are automatically entered in the list of permitted IP addresses. You can release individual IP addresses for access in the list of permitted IP addresses. IP addresses released for access can be opened.

Block web sites with adult content (German BPjM module)

If you have selected the blacklist, you can also block the web sites deemed harmful to young people (in the BPjM module). This index is compiled by the German federal government's review board.

Blocked Network Applications

Here you have the possibility to deny internet access to network applications. Select from the drop-down list the network applications to be blocked.

You can edit the list of network applications by clicking on "Internet / Filters / Lists".

Assigned Network Devices

The table shows the devices that have been assigned this access profile. The devices are listed in alphabetical order.

Assigning an access profile to a network device:

  1. Select the "Parental Control" tab in the "Internet / Filter" menu.
  2. Find the network device in the table.
  3. Select the access profile for the network device in the "Access Profile" column.
