Access to Home Network

Access to Home Network

Under "Access to Home Network" you can configure the connection to your router (FRITZ!Box). The following functions are available:

  • Deactivate adoption of the settings from the Mesh Wi-Fi of the FRITZ!Box.
  • In a home network without Mesh: Adopt Wi-Fi settings from router via WPS.
  • Configuration of a wireless connection to the router whose radio network is to be expanded by the FRITZ!Repeater.
  • Change access mode to the router. The FRITZ!Repeater can be connected with the router via Wi-Fi or LAN cable.

Disabling the Adoption of the Settings from the Mesh

Overview

In the home network of a FRITZ!Box with Mesh Wi-Fi, the FRITZ!Repeater adopts the following Wi-Fi settings from the FRITZ!Box: Wi-Fi network name (SSID), Wi-Fi channel, network key (Wi-Fi password), Wi-Fi guest access and Wi-Fi switching schedule. Changes in the FRITZ!Box are automatically applied to the FRITZ!Repeater. You can disable adoption of the settings.

Example

You would specifically like to select the Wi-Fi network of the FRITZ!Repeater on a wireless device (a laptop, for instance). Then disable adoption of the Wi-Fi settings from the Mesh and set a different Wi-Fi network name (SSID) in the FRITZ!Repeater than in the FRITZ!Box.

Requirements

Rules

The following rules apply when you disable adoption of the FRITZ!Box settings:

  • The settings for your Wi-Fi network, Wi-Fi channel, and Wi-Fi security are configured separately from the FRITZ!Box.
  • The settings for the Wi-Fi schedule and Wi-Fi guest access can be adopted from the FRITZ!Box or configured separately from the FRITZ!Box.

Instructions: Disabling Adoption of the FRITZ!Box Settings

  1. Disable the "Adopt settings enabled" checkbox.
  2. Click "Apply".

In the browser, a page appears with the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and Wi-Fi network key. With this key you can establish a connection to the FRITZ!Repeater on wireless devices.

  3. Click "To Overview".
  4. Under "Wireless / Radio Network", configure a wireless LAN name (SSID), and under "Wireless / Security" set a network key (wireless LAN password) for the FRITZ!Repeater.
  5. Check the settings under "Wireless / Schedule" and under "Wireless / Guest Access".

Adopting Wireless Settings from the Router (FRITZ!Box) via WPS

Overview

In the home network without Mesh, the FRITZ!Repeater adopts the following settings from the router (FRITZ!Box) when connecting via Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi network name (SSID), network key, and Wi-Fi channel settings.

Changes in the router are not automatically applied to the FRITZ!Repeater. You can apply the new settings to the FRITZ!Repeater by mouse click.

Requirements

  • Mesh is not enabled, for example, if the FRITZ!OS version on the FRITZ!Box is older than 6.88, or if the internet router is not a FRITZ!Box.

Rules

  • If you change the wireless LAN settings of the router, you have to adopt these anew.

Instructions: Adopting Wireless LAN Settings

  1. Click the "Start Adoption" button.
  2. Start WPS on the router. On a FRITZ!Box, press the "WPS", "WLAN/WPS" or "WLAN" button until the "WLAN" LED on the FRITZ!Box starts flashing.

Connecting to the Router (FRITZ!Box) via Wireless LAN

Overview

You can set up the wireless connection to the home network in the user interface. Select the wireless network to be extended by the FRITZ!Repeater.

Requirements

  • To expand the radio network of a FRITZ!Box: The option "Allow all new wireless devices" is enabled on the "Wireless / Security" page of the FRITZ!Box user interface. This is the default setting in the FRITZ!Box.
  • To expand the radio network of another router: The router allows the FRITZ!Repeater to establish a wireless connection.

Instructions: Setting Up a Wireless Connection to the Home Network

  1. Select "Access to Home Network" in the user interface.
  2. Click on "Individual Settings for the Wireless Connection to the Home Network".
  3. Select the radio network you would like to extend.
  4. If the radio network is displayed in the list as encrypted with WPA, enable "WPA encryption" under "Security". If the radio network has no encryption, select "non-encrypted".
  5. Enter the network key of the router. The network key is found under "Wireless / Security" in the user interface of a FRITZ!Box.
  6. Click on "Apply".

Connection Options

The FRITZ!Repeater enables wireless connections in the 2.4-GHz and and in the 5-GHz band. If the router (FRITZ!Box) also supports both bands, the FRITZ!Repeater can use these bands to connect to the router in different ways.

Note:We recommend leaving the "Flexible frequency band allocation" option enabled.

OptionFunction
Keep frequency band The FRITZ!Repeater always uses the same band for the connection to a wireless device as it does for forwarding data to the router. This halves the bandwidth available for wireless devices.
Use crossband repeating Faster data transmission: The 2.4-GHz band and the 5-GHz band are always crossed: When the FRITZ!Repeater uses the 2.4-GHz band for the connection to a wireless device, then it uses the 5-GHz band for forwarding data to the router, and vice versa.
Use flexible frequency band reallocation (recommended)

Optimum data transmission through "intelligent" crossband repeating: The FRITZ!Repeater does not always cross the 2.4-GHz and the 5-GHz band, but selects the band better for data transmission in a given situation.

For instance, the FRITZ!Repeater can receive data from a wireless device on the 5-GHz band and forward them via the 5-GHz band, while concurrently receiving data from another wireless device via the 2.4-GHz band and forwarding them via the 5-GHz band.

Changing the Type of Connection

Overview

You can establish a wireless connection between the FRITZ!Repeater and your router (FRITZ!Box) or connect the FRITZ!Repeater to the router using a LAN cable.

In the preconfigured "Wireless bridge" access mode you can establish a wireless connection to the router. If you would like to connect the FRITZ!Repeater using a LAN cable, you must change the access mode an set up a LAN bridge.

Example 1

Your router has no wireless LAN. Then set "LAN bridge" access mode.

Example 2

You would like to deploy the FRITZ!Repeater at a location where no stable wireless connection to your FRITZ!Box is possible. Then set "LAN bridge" access mode.

Instructions: Changing the Type of Connection

  1. Select "Access to Home Network".
  2. Click on "Change Type of Connection".
  3. Select an access mode.
  4. Click on "Next". A wizard takes you through the next steps.
