Mesh Settings
Home Network / Mesh / Mesh Settings
You can use more than one FRITZ!Box in your Mesh. The different FRITZ!Boxes then assume different functions and are configured for different modes of operation.
Changing the Mesh Operating Mode
In the Mesh there is always one FRITZ!Box that is the Mesh Master. Every other FRITZ!Box in the Mesh is configured as a Mesh Repeater.
Features of the Operating Modes
Operating Mode | Function |
---|---|
Mesh Master | The settings of this FRITZ!Box are applied to the entire Mesh. In the default settings, the FRITZ!Box is the router in the home network that provides the internet connection. You can also configure the FRITZ!Box as a network device (IP client) in the home network of a another router. |
Mesh Repeater | This FRITZ!Box expands the wireless network of the Mesh Master. Wireless devices receive access to the internet via the Mesh Repeater wherever the wireless connection to the Mesh Master is poor or cannot be established at all. Mesh Repeaters automatically adopt the following settings from the Mesh Master:
|
Network device (IP client) in the home network of another router | The FRITZ!Box is integrated into the network of another router, for instance, into the network of another FRITZ!Box. This FRITZ!Box and connected network devices (for instance computer, smartphones) receive their IP addresses from the other router. |
Example 1
You would like to use this FRITZ!Box to expand the wireless network of another FRITZ!Box. The other FRITZ!Box provides the internet connection and is configured as the Mesh Master.
Configure the FRITZ!Box as a Mesh Repeater.
Example 2
The internet connection is provided by a router without Mesh, for instance, another FRITZ!Box with a FRITZ!OS before version 7, or a router from another manufacturer. However, you would like to use Mesh in your wireless LAN.
For this, configure the FRITZ!Box as a Mesh Master and as a network device (IP client) in the home network of the router that supplies the internet connection.

Instructions: Configuring the FRITZ!Box as an IP Client
See Help on "Home Network / Network / Network Settings"
Instructions: Disabling "FRITZ!Box is a network device (IP client)"
When this setting is disabled, the network settings (IP address, DHCP server) that were active before this settings was enabled are restored.
- Disable the checkbox "This FRITZ!Box is a network device (IP client) in the home network of a different router".
- Click "Apply".
The IP address is displayed at which you can now reach the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Restart all devices that are connected with the FRITZ!Box wirelessly or via LAN cable.
Using Telephony in the Mesh
In a FRITZ!Box that is configured as Mesh Master, settings for the "Use Telephony in the Mesh" feature are available.
If you use telephony in the Mesh, you only have to configure your telephone numbers in the Mesh Master. Other FRITZ!Boxes in the Mesh (Mesh Repeaters) can then simply adopt and use the telephone numbers automatically.

Adopting Settings from the Mesh WiFi
In a FRITZ!Box that is configured as Mesh Master, you can enable and disable adoption of the settings from the Mesh Master. Adoption of the settings is enabled by default.
Example
You would like to configure a wireless guest access of your own for the FRITZ!Box used as a Mesh Repeater. For this, disable adoption of the settings from the Mesh WiFi and set up the guest access under "Wireless / Guest Access".
Using the Telephone Book of the Mesh Master
On a FRITZ!Box configured as a Mesh Repeater you can use the telephone book of the Mesh Master. If you enable this feature, all of the telephone books on the Mesh Master are available on the Mesh Repeater. Telephone books that are saved on the Mesh Repeater can no longer be used.
On the Mesh Repeater you can edit telephone book entries and create new telephone books. As long as the option for using the telephone books from the Mesh Master is enabled, all changes and new telephone books are saved in the Mesh Master, not in the Mesh Repeater.
